14 tips for eating messy foods that go everywhere

It is extremely difficult to maintain a distinguished and sophisticated air at the table when we have crumbs on our chin and sauce running down our mouths. At the same time, when we think about how easily certain foods come apart and are unmanageable, we can’t be blamed! Furthermore, there is a universal law that states that that which is good to eat is always going to go everywhere (crumbs, dribbles, and other such glamour). However, like all “problems” (first world ones, granted), there are solutions. Here are a few tips to help you literally save face at dinner parties. 

1) To stop the contents of your hamburger from running down your chin, eat it upside down!

You can even cut it in two before trying this out, if it is a very large burger.

2) Triangular slices of watermelon are anatomically incompatible with our faces (which is why it’s always all over our cheeks)

We would advise that you cut the watermelon as shown below to avoid such inconveniences. In fact, it is often better to prepare small mouthfuls and to take your time with foods that tend to go everywhere.

3) Tired of your Oreos disintegrating and falling into the bottom of your glass of milk? Use a fork to pierce the cream and soak it in safety!

4) Parents know the horror of children’s greasy hands, covered in all sorts of culinary wonders, touching the furniture, the walls and the remote control. Here’s how to avoid it.

(We admit that this ruins the fun of licking your fingers after a snack, but it works!)

5)  To eat tacos or other such foods without losing half of the dressing, wrap it in a leaf of lettuce

The advantage of this technique is that the fresh crispiness of the lettuce only adds to the eating experience! If you don’t like lettuce, wrap everything in some tin foil, which will keep it all in place.

6) If you’re making a sandwich with a very thick sauce or spread, use that to make a border, to avoid the rest of the garnish from falling out.

If you don’t have anything thick to spread on your bread, put the dressing in the middle (avoiding the edges a little) and when you eat it from the centre the dressing will spread gradually outwards.

7) Instead of chocolate, put a marshmallow in the base of an ice cream cone to avoid the end of it becoming soggy (and the ensuing catastrophe).
