When something as simple as salt can help us to have better health and feel better, as well as taking care of the housework at the same time, it’s a win win situation! We particularly appreciate the fact that it is both cheap and easy to find. Most people already have it in their kitchens, and use it daily…. Although we’re not sure they usually use it the way we are proposing today!
For cleaning the house
1) Make a burned pot as good as new
Sprinkle the base of the pot with salt and allow it to work for two hours. Clean it afterwards as you normally would and notice how the traces of burn easily slide off!
2) Remove limescale from the bath
Put a little salt on your sponge to help you clean and scrub away the traces. Limescale will soon be nothing but a bad memory!
3) Shine up your porcelain dishes
To polish your porcelain, put a little salt on a soft cloth.
4) Clean your coffee pots, teapots and wine decanters
With a little white vinegar and the energy to scrub a little, no stain will get the better of you…. above all limey residue!

5) An excellent exfoliant
Use salt to scrub your skin and remove dead skin cells. It is also unrivaled for removing corns from your feet and for promoting circulation. Circular massaging movements should render your skin soft and smooth.
6) Relieving tired feet
Prepare a basin of warm water and add a dessertspoon of bleach and a dessertspoon of salt. Soak your feet for fifteen minutes before rinsing them with cold water. Dry them and moisturise.
Taking care of your health
7) For sore throats
Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a glass of lukewarm water and gargle with it throughout the day. If you would like to make a heat compress, heat up some large grain salt and put it into a sock, which you can place on your neck until it cools.
8) Make your own toothpaste
Mix some sea salt with bicarbonate of soda for a home-made toothpaste that is good for your teeth and gums.
9) A heat compress for relieving pain
Heat up 2 or 3 handfuls of large grain salt in a pot and put them into a face cloth or a thick sock. Seal it well and apply to the area where you have pain for 15 minutes. The large grain salt can retain heat and your compress should stay nice and warm for quite a long time.
10) Remove a wart
Alessandra Moro Buronzo’s recommends the following in her guide: “Cut an onion in two, and remove the two halves of the centre part. Fill the hollow with large grain salt and leave it for at least an hour. Retrieve the juice that has formed in a bowl, strain it and apply it to the wart two or three times a day. Repeat every day for approximately ten days”.
11) Ease muscle stiffness and rheumatism with Epsom Salts
Add Epsom Salts to your bathwater to reduce post-exercise muscle stiffness. For rheumatism, you can dissolve a good kilo of unrefined sea salt in your bathwater and bathe in it for 20 minutes.
12) Take care of an ingrown toenail
Prepare a basin of hot water, to which you add several spoons of salt. Bathing your feet for around 15 to 30 minutes will soften the skin around the nail and the salt will reduce infection and swelling in the area.
13) Fight acid reflux
Soothe heart burn with a salt and water mouthwash, which is an excellent antiseptic and will reduce the amount of fluids coming up.
14) Thrush: soothe itching and pain and accelerate healing
Take a hot bath to which you have added a cup of salt. If this helps, don’t hesitate to repeat the process!
15) Relief from bites and stings
You can start by placing the affected area in sea water or salted water. A salt water bath without rinsing will work for nettle stings. Finally, for an insect bite, wet the skin, add some oil (sunflower oil/olive oil/coconut oil) and cover the whole lot with salt.
