5 quick health and beauty tips to try using clay

Clay is a beauty classic that we simply can’t do without. We use it readily on our faces as a mask, and we also tend to turn to it when our hair is greasy. But for such a well known substance, there are still several less well known ways of using it, and we don’t always use it in the correct way. To make the most of it, here are 5 health and beauty tips for using clay. 

1) Let’s start with a classic mask, but be aware that you can’t just use it any old way!

First and foremost, choose your clay wisely! Some people automatically go for green clay, perhaps because they don’t know that other types exist, or they may think they are all the same. The problem is that certain types of clay don’t work well for certain types of skin, and can even aggravate them.

Which type of clay is best for your skin type?

  • Green or yellow clay: for oily or combination skin
  • Red or white clay: for dry or sensitive skin

How to make the mask

Mix some water and clay with a wooden spoon until you have a smooth paste. You can boost the effectiveness of the mask with acacia honey. Leave it on your skin for around ten minutes. Re-moisten it regularly to prevent the mask from drying out completely and to allow the clay to keep working on the impurities.

2) On a cut or wound

The above mixture can also be used for minor cuts and wounds. To help your skin to heal, apply the paste to the relevant area and leave it on for around twenty minutes.

3) As a toothpaste

There are several natural toothpaste recipes using clay. Some of them are in powder form while others are in the form of a classic paste. To create your own, you can mix 2 dessertspoons of green clay with 1 dessertspoon of bicarbonate of soda, 2 to 5 cloves (ground to a powder), 2 drops of mint or lemon essential oil and finally add a spoon of water to give your paste the perfect texture. Another recipe consists of a mixture made up of green clay mixed with a clove infusion and a little olive oil (a mixture which can be kept in the fridge for up to two months).

4) A dressing/wrap

If you suffer from joint or back pain, you can use clay as a dressing or a wrap. Mix the powder with a little water, in order to form a mud-like texture. Put it on a gauze, a paper towel or a cloth which you fold over (which will prevent the hairs on your body from sticking to it) before placing it on the relevant area. Leave the clay to dry and keep it on for as long as possible.

5) As a shampoo

Make an opaque liquid by mixing 250 ml of water with some clay. Once you are in the shower (with damp hair), pour the mixture on to your scalp. Massage it in gently and leave it to work for 2 minutes before rinsing.
