Hygiene in toilets is something to be taken seriously. It is never pleasant to go into a toilet that smells bad or that is dirty. And how many of you feel a little uncomfortable at the idea of having to do your business in toilets that look like they’ve been through the wars? The problem is that toilets are notoriously difficult to clean, and nobody likes the idea of having to touch the area to take on the task (even with industrial strength rubber gloves and having washed our hands ten times afterwards).
We have already given you a technique for removing hard water stains from your toilets, as well as an easy way to make your own toilet cleaning tablets. Today’s tips will complete all of this, and give you more ways to ensure your toilets are truly clean and smell great.
1) An effective deodorising, cleaning and disinfectant paste
Take the juice of one lemon and add bicarbonate of soda to form a paste. The consistency shouldn’t be too runny, and the mixture should resemble a rather thick cake mixture.
Apply the mixture all over: the lid and seat (outside and inside), the toilet bowl, the base (where the toilets are fixed to the floor), inside the bowl, etc. and leave it to work for 15 minutes. While it is working, you can take a spoon of the lemon mixture and use it on any objects or storage units in the bathroom. Next scrub the relevant areas with an old toothbrush soaked in white vinegar, pour some more white vinegar over the areas and finish off with a damp facecloth.
2) Use a dryer sheet or a tissue soaked in white vinegar for hard-to-reach areas

For a deep clean, don’t hesitate to remove the toilet lid and seat and to clean them separately. It will thus be easier to clean the toilets without these things getting in your way.
3) Pour 130 mls of white vinegar into the cistern, leave it to work for 15 minutes and flush it 2 or 3 times
The vinegar will dislodge any encrusted odours in the cistern. Don’t forget this step.
4) Having used the toilet brush, place it between the seat and the toilet bowl to dry it out
This prevents too much humidity and dirt from building up in the toilet brush holder.
When you add your disinfectant (such as the tablets mentioned above, or white vinegar), leave your toilet brush to soak in the bowl for a few minutes to clean and disinfect it, and flush the toilet while the toilet brush is still in the toilet to rinse it.
5) Put some bicarbonate of soda in a jar and add a few drops of essential oil. Cover it with a fine cloth or with tin foil in which you pierce a few holes.
This will add a pleasant smell to your toilet in all circumstances, and you can change the scent from time to time according to your preferences: lemon, mint, orange, lavender essential oil, etc. With a pretty jar and a little ribbon, it will make for a nice decoration!
6) Make a deodorising spray!
A few spritzes will have your toilets smelling fresher in a few seconds flat. Simply mix the following ingredients in a 4 oz glass spray bottle:
- 2 tablespoons of distilled white vinegar
- 2 tablespoons of vodka
- 2 tablespoons of water
- 30 drops of one of the following essential oils: lavender, clary sage, peppermint, purification or thieves
