If you are lucky enough to own gold jewellery, you are sure to want to ensure it lasts as long as possible, in its original condition -in other words, without scratches and as shiny as new. But as we know, this jewellery, as high quality as it may be, can get tarnished from contact with the skin. Regular gentle cleaning is a great help. But there is no need to head to the jeweller’s for expensive cleaning products, be inspired by Granny, who knows how to do it with cheap, natural products. If your jewellery has precious stones encrusted, remember that you have to be even gentler!
1) Water with Marseille soap (Savon de Marseille)
Give your jewellery a one-minute bath in soapy water. Scrub it gently with a toothbrush and rinse with lukewarm water. Lay it on some kitchen paper and give a wipe of a chamois cloth to dry it off.
Bonus tip: you can also use washing up liquid instead of Marseille soap.
2) Breadcrumbs
Make a ball of the crumbs from fresh bread and rub your jewellery with it. We don’t know who came up with this, but it works!
3) Chemical yeast

Sprinkle your jewellery with a little chemical yeast. Scrub it gently, rinse and wipe to dry it well.
4) Onion
The juice from an onion can give an amazing shine. You simply have to apply it to the jewellery, rub it in and polish it with a chamois cloth.
5) Toothpaste

Brush your jewellery with a little toothpaste. Scrub it gently with a toothbrush before letting it dry. Polish it before rinsing with lukewarm water.
6) Beer

Gently scrub solid gold jewellery with beer, which will shine it up spectacularly.
