Even with organic foods becoming more and more readily available, not all shops offer a huge choice of organic products, and the prices are still higher. Result: we find ourselves buying regular fruit and vegetables that are full of pesticides. We content ourselves with rinsing them with water, because we know that people touch the fruit with their hands, but that is as far as we go. However, a good clean can in fact remove toxic products, without losing the nutritional content of the food.
1) Choose your cleaning solution (and keep it in an old soap dispenser or washing up liquid bottle)
Choice n°1 with grapefruit and vinegar
- 20 drops of grapefruit seed extract
- 1 dessertspoon of bicarbonate of soda
- 1 cup of white vinegar
- 1 cup of water
Choice n°2 with lemon and vinegar
- The juice of 1 lemon
- 1 spoon of white vinegar
- 1 cup of water
Choice n°3 with bicarbonate of soda, lemon and vinegar
- The juice of 1/2 a lemon
- 1 cup of white vinegar
- 1 cup of water
- 1 spoon of bicarbonate of soda
2) How to use the solution?
Quick method
When all of the ingredients are well mixed and the bicarbonate of soda is dissolved, use the solution to scrub your fruit and vegetables for one minute. Rinse well.
If you have more time
Soak the fruit and vegetables in the mix for 30 minutes while you take care of other things. Rinse well afterwards.
Note: Once used, it is best to throw out the solution, as it loses its effectiveness during soaking.
