Are you a fan of fish? All the better for you, it’s great for your health! Unfortunately, fish can often leave unpleasant odours after it, which last for several days. All the rooms in your home are affected, and the odour can even get into yours or your family’s clothes…. not so appealing. To keep eating fish without having to put up with unpleasant fish odours, here are 10 tips to get rid of them.

1/ Vinegar

Boil some water in a pot and add some white vinegar. The smell of this mixture of water and boiled vinegar will camouflage the fish odours in the kitchen, as well as in the rest of the house.

2/ Fresh ginger

Ginger, like fish, is excellent for your health. While cooking your fish, whether it’s in the oven or in the pan, add a piece of fresh ginger to the oil or place it beside the fish. This will stop the odours from spreading!

3/ Orange scented candles

Citrus fruits are particularly effective for eliminating fish odours. Light orange scented candles from the moment you start preparing your fish, and they will camouflage the odour. You can also try this tip with lemon scented candles.

4/ Essential oils

Pour a few drops of essential oil into a small bowl when you start cooking your fish. The fragrance of the essential oils will overtake the fish odours, but make sure not to overdo it. If the dose is too strong, the smell of the essential oils could become overwhelming.

5/ Armenian paper

You can find Armenian paper in health shops or in certain pharmacies. It is highly effective for absorbing fish odours. Burn it just like incense after having cooked fish, and the fish odours will become nothing more than a bad memory.

6/ Orange and cloves

Cut an orange in half, and squeeze it into a pot of water. Keep the orange peels, and stick some cloves into each peel, before adding them to the pot. Bring the mixture to the boil on a gentle heat, and the bad odours will disappear.

A few sprigs of thyme should be enough to diffuse a pleasant odour. Put them into a saucepan and heat them up on a low heat.

10/ Eliminate fish odours with the extractor fan

Remember to switch on the extractor fan in your kitchen 10 minutes before starting to cook your fish. This will prevent the odour from being diffused all around the house.
