Mosquitoes often are the main culprit but unfortunately there are many other insects that can cause problems like black fly, bed bugs and even midges in our own country. However if you know that you are going to be visiting a country where you are likely to get bitten by mosquitoes it is good to have a few solutions up your sleeve. Here are three natural remedies that can help to calm the itch and let you sight-see or do excursions in comfort.
Honey remedy
What do you need:
- Drop of liquid honey
Honey is great in many natural remedies. It has many anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. As a result this tasty ingredient is also exceedingly effective at soothing itchy insect bites, particularly mosquitoes. All you need is a drop of honey that you can rub onto the effected areas. This will calm your bite in no time, however you need to watch that you don’t make a sticky mess!
Bicarbonate of soda remedy
What do you need:
- Tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda
- Water
Baking soda is a miracle ingredient that can be used to cure all sorts of ailments and can be used in many homemade cosmetics and cleaning products. Everyone has this ingredient in their household so it is easy to come by. All you need to do is mix a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda with enough water to make a paste. Once you have your paste apply it to the affected area and then leave to sit for ten minutes. This will help to soothe any itchiness associated with the bite. Rinse off using water water.
Onion remedy

- A sliced onion
While on holiday it should be fairly easy to access an onion in the supermarket. Although they make your eyes tear up, onions are an excellent remedy for calming itchy insect bites. All you need to do is to slice an onion and then place it slice directly onto the insect bite for several minutes.
Thyme remedy
What do you need:
- Finely sliced thyme
- or Springs of thyme and Water
Thyme is a known for its anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Chop up your thyme finely to make a sort of paste and then leave it to sit on your skin for roughly ten minutes. You can also make an infusion with springs of thyme once cooled you can then dip a cloth into your mixture and place it onto your itchy bite.
