Although we may not want to think about it, we will soon be heading back into boots season. And when heavy storms hit, you are sure to be glad of something to keep your feet dry and toasty! So why not make this home made wax leather treatment, to shine up your boots as good as new? It will look after the leather and make the shoes more water resistant. Here is how to make it…
What you need:
- 30 g of beeswax (white beeswax if possible, to avoid any problems with discoloration – you can never be too careful)
- 120 mls of olive oil
- A tin box or a glass jar
- Optional: around 2 g of powder pigment that matches the colour of your shoes (like in this example, where we use oxide pigment powder. However, leave it out if you are not sure of which shade to add).
Method:
1) Put the wax and the oil into a container that can go in the microwave.
2) Heat the mixture in the microwave for 30 seconds. Stir and heat it for a further 30 seconds. Continue until it is perfectly melted and mixed. (If you don’t have a microwave, you can melt it over a bain-marie, gradually mixing the ingredients).
3) If you are using pigments, now is the time to add them. Stir well so that you have a smooth mixture.
4) Pour the mixture into your container. Leave it to cool and solidify. It should take around one hour to harden.
And it’s ready! Now all that is left is to polish your shoes!
