Make an effective, humane trap for mice and rats

Rats may make great company for some, but when we don’t want them, rats are not only annoying but difficult to get rid of. Certain available solutions respect neither animals nor the environment, as a result of their toxicity. If you would like to rid your home of rats and mice, here is an idea to trap them in a humane way.

What you need:

– a large bucket
– a wire hanger
– a strong plastic bottle with its cover

What to do?

  1. Make two holes on opposite sides of the bucket, and at the top and bottom of the plastic bottle.
  2. Straighten the hanger until it is completely straight and insert it into the bucket and the plastic bottle as shown in the photo below. (The bottle should be able to turn.)
  3. Cover the bottle with cheese spread or with peanut butter.
  4. Use a plank or a board to make a ramp.
  5. If necessary, pour enough water into the bucket for the rats to drown.

The mice and the rats will climb up the ramp, and jump towards the bottle to get the peanut butter. The bottle will turn and make them fall into the water. If you want to capture the critters without harming them, don’t put any water in the bucket.

If you are not due to return a long period of time and you are afraid of bad odours forming, put some antifreeze into the water. In this case you must ensure that your pets don’t go near the trap.
