Cramps are sudden muscle contractions that surprise us with the pain and discomfort they cause. They often occur during situations of high activity such as sport, staying in the same position for a long time or even sex. They are often linked with fatigue, here are a few tips and tricks that will help prevent cramps and get them to disappear quickly when they come on:
To prevent the occurence of cramps:
- Drink lots of water. A muscle that is not hydrated is unable to acces the minerals it needs easily to function.
- Increase your magnesium intake. You will find them in lentils, green veg and chocolate.
- Increase your potassium intake. You will find it in dried fruit, especially apricot and banana.
When doing sport:
- Always take the time to warm up
- Drink regularly taking little sips.
- Choose a fabric that is not too tight and adapted for the sport you are going to practice.
If you have a cramp:
- Stop immediately. Lie down or sit.
- Stretch the muscle slowly and gradually, breathing deeply.
- Massage your muscle with some arnica oil.
- Apply heat compresses to the muscle.
In general, make sure to limit certain factors such as cold, fatigue and the consumption of coffee, tea, alcohol or tobacco.
