When filling up with fuel, smiles are tense when you hand over your credit card to the person behind the checkout to make payment and the faces of those who pay directly at the gas pump are also looking sad. This is easy to understand: fuel prices are always expensive and trying to find a cheaper place is not always fruitful (especially if you do not have time to make a detour). Granny can’t give you the miracle solution to have free fuel (that would be amazing)! On the other hand, a few practical little tricks can save you money in the long run.
1) Choose the right time to refuel
It is best to go early in the morning.
Fuel tanks are capped underground and with the morning coolness, the density of petrol or diesel fuel is lower than in the day when liquids expand. A liter bought in the morning will not be quite equal to the liter bought late in the afternoon or evening because of significant temperature differences. In the petroleum industry, specific mass (density) and temperature play a very important role.
2) Fill correctly
Often, we want to fill up with fuel as quickly as possible, so we press down fully on the handle of pistol. Now, to press as much as possible the gasoline vaporizes. In the end, you refuel in part with steam and you gain nothing. It is necessary to press less strongly so that the filling rate is less powerful and that only gasoline fills the tank. You will get more for your money.
3) Fill at the right moment
You will be surprised, but some people do not wait until the tank is empty or almost empty to fill it. They do it when the tank is half full! Strange, but not so stupid when you know that the more the tank is full, the less air there is. It’s important to have that in mind because the fuel is evaporating. Tank reservoirs have floating ceilings for this reason, the contact between air and fuel is non-existent. Also, think about this phenomenon of evaporation and think that it makes you lose more gasoline than you realise.
4) What do you mean, dirty fuel?
You get to the fuel pump and see a tank truck? In that case, turn away and find another petrol station! You may collect dirt from the fuel due to the mixing of the large tanks that coincide with the filling.
